Home Energy Ratings are on the Rise

In 2013, 70% more homes were energy rated in the U.S. and issued a HERS Index Score. There were 218,864 ratings conducted in 2013, compared to 128,000 in 2012.

RESNET Executive Director Steve Baden commented on this increase, “These numbers reflect that home energy ratings are fast becoming a mainstream in the U.S. housing market.

The Building Performance Institute, Inc. (BPI) recently announced the launch of a national rating program to provide customers with an affordable, easy to understand rating of their home that can be combined with a comprehensive home energy audit. The BPI Rating Program is now available in Florida, which last July recognized BPI as one of a select group of organizations authorized to provide a Building Energy-Efficiency Rating System (BERS) in the state. BPI's program begins in Florida and is expected to be fully operational nationwide by mid-2014.

New RESNET Requirements

On December 4, 2013, the RESNET Board adopted several proposed amendments that went into effect on January 4, 2014. These amendments changed the requirements for becoming a certified RESNET HERS Rater. Old requirements for becoming a Rater included passing the National Rater Core Exam, completing two probationary ratings during classroom training, and agreeing to the Quality Assurance (QA) Process with a Quality Assurance Provider, a process that includes completing three probationary ratings.
