Barney McClung, HVAC professional and curriculum development specialist for Everblue, recently attended the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) Building Performance Forum in Austin, TX, to remain up-to-date on industry advancements. Dedicated to making life more comfortable for contractors and their customers, the conference provided a great venue for contracting industry professionals to discuss new techniques and skills for career advancement. ACCA LogoBarney: Overall, the conference was a great event, providing a plethora of information related to the air conditioning contracting industry. The conference focused on two key areas: home performance contracting and service management. For the first half of the conference, the seminars focused exclusively on new home performance contractors, providing the necessary training tools, mentoring opportunities, and skill support to maximize career success. In the latter half related to service managers, the conference focused on ways to keep technicians productive, as many of the licensed contractors utilize unlicensed technicians to assist them on projects.

Some of the topics discussed during the conference included:

  • Home energy performance strategies
  • Sub-contractor training
  • Overview of energy auditing
  • Air-sealing techniques (specifically for the pest control industry)
  • Insulation installation
  • Generator selection, installation, and maintenance
  • Financial results awareness
  • Client interaction
  • Workflow organization

Over the course of the week, I had the opportunity to interact with numerous industry professionals, and I look forward to next year’s event. Individuals interested in learning more about the home performance industry should not only consider attending the event next year but also enrolling in an energy efficiency training course. Currently, Everblue offers a variety of energy efficiency courses such as BPI Building Analyst, Envelope Professional, Weatherization, Heating Professional, AC/Heat Pump Professional, RESNET, NATE, and Commercial Building Energy Auditor.
