Envisioning a Sustainable Tomorrow

Located just outside Charlotte, North Carolina, Everblue's headquarters serve as the center for training the Earth’s sustainable workforce. As a result, we are continually aspiring to share stories of other professionals with similar sustainability motivations.

Perhaps one of the most inspiring calls to action seen in our area is the Envision Charlotte campaign which started in late 2011.

The campaign is a collaboration between both public and private sectors in hopes to develop a global model for sustainability. With sponsors such as Duke Energy, Verizon Wireless, Cisco, and Siemens, the city of Charlotte hopes to reduce its overall CO2 emission by 20% within five years. Not only is Envision Charlotte focusing its efforts towards sensible energy consumption; they have developed programs in sensible water usage, air quality, and waste management as well.

With over 28 organizations and businesses working together through Envision Charlotte committees, professionals are constantly developing solutions to Charlotte’s most pressing sustainability matters.

One of the coolest features of the campaign is the live uptown energy usage application; it is available online and at kiosks placed throughout uptown Charlotte. The application collects live building energy usage information like the kWh (kilowatts per hour) used daily, weekly, and monthly. This data is then compared to previously analyzed data and expresses the findings in easily understandable statistics. To give you an idea of what I mean, according to Envision Charlotte, over the past 30 days, Charlotte’s energy reduction has been equivalent to taking 494 cross-country bus trips off the road. Now that's what we're talking about!

A last notable action by Envision Charlotte is its push to make Charlotte homes more energy efficient with Duke Energy’s Smart Savers program. By providing free tips and tricks to reducing home energy bills, Envision: Charlotte is giving private home owners an opportunity to contribute to the sustainability movement. Simple fixes go along way, and Envision Charlotte is doing a great job showing that.
