National Impacts of the BP Oil Spill

Beyond the immediate environmental catastrophe, what will the Gulf of Mexico oil spill mean for America's Energy Policy?

For the foreseeable future, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill will simply mean more imported oil, more money to terrorist supporting nations, and more environmental risk in far-away places.

Right now, we've got a moratorium on new drill permits, and I am sure that we'll restrict offshore drilling in American waters. Longer term, we'll actually raise the safety standards of our own drilling efforts. So what that means is that we'll have to buy more oil from the Middle East, Venezuela, Iran, and so on. What this means is that we'll spend more money funding terrorists, communists, fascists, and dictatorships. What this means is that we won't actually make the world any safer from these types of oil spills because we'll have simply exported the potential of a future accident to other less concerned countries. We'll have basically exported our pollution.

Wow! Do you think Hugo Chavez cares if his country has an oil spill? How much do you think Iran is smiling at our misfortune right now?

Does anyone think this oil spill might actually spur us as a nation to break our oil addiction?
