What is LEED Exam Prep?

Remember when you were in high school, and you were expected to take the SAT exam? Some students prepared for this difficult exam by reading an SAT prep book. Others participated in a live SAT prep class.

Now that you’re a professional in the working world, you may have come across the term LEED. LEED is a rating system for green buildings. When you hear someone say that they are planning to get LEED certified, what they mean is that they plan to earn an individual credential that denotes their knowledge and proficiency of the LEED rating system. This is called LEED accreditation. To earn a LEED accreditation, you must pass the LEED exam.

Just like high schoolers preparing for the SAT, sustainability professionals prepare for the LEED exam by participating in a LEED exam prep course.

What’s Covered in a LEED Exam Prep Course?

The whole intent behind the training is to teach you about the LEED rating system. When designing, building, or analyzing a building’s energy efficiency, you want to take into account various factors and processes that contribute to the building’s overall energy consumption. The LEED rating system breaks these factors down into what’s called credit categories.

The LEED credit categories are as follows:

  • Integrative Process
  • Location & Transportation
  • Sustainable Sites
  • Water Efficiency
  • Energy & Atmosphere
  • Materials & Resources
  • Indoor Environmental Quality
  • Innovation
  • Regional Priority

The U.S. Green Building Council created the LEED rating system and awards points to building projects that make an effort to satisfy requirements in each of these categories. This is where the certification of buildings come in, but before we can even get into that, we need to finish talking about the steps that lead you there.
