Benefits of an ENERGY STAR Certified Home

Fri, 2012-07-27 08:39

When considering the purchase of a new home, prospective homeowners are forced to make difficult decisions based on factors such as price, location, size, and amenities. With the continued growth of the home energy efficiency market, home buyers can find solace in one constant: a 20-30% increase in energy efficiency for ENERGY STAR certified homes. The ENERGY STAR certification, set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), ensures that new homes, three stories or less, maintain energy efficient features, while simultaneously providing improved home quality and comfort.

Green Building Thoughts from 11,000 Feet

Thu, 2012-07-26 08:12

Out on the trail this weekend, I was appreciating the building clouds, hoping for rain, and reflecting on our work in the green building community. Here in Colorado, we’ve had a rough start to the summer. In fact, our whole country has. Wildfires continue to consume vast portions of the West, while the worst drought in a generation and erratic weather is forcing farmers in the Midwest to abandon their ruined crops, and residents in the East have to dig out from the freak land hurricane that hit earlier in the month.

Energy Star Continues to Evolve

Tue, 2012-07-24 11:58

I recently noticed an Energy Star logo on a promotional brochure for a product that does not actually use energy. The product being advertised was an insulating additive for paint that claimed to help keep homes cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The product further claimed to be a scientifically proven, environmentally friendly way to reduce energy costs by 20% or more.

10 Reasons for Corporate Sustainability

Thu, 2012-07-19 11:09

Sustainable business practices have taken the forefront in the national conversation about sustainability. Although there are numerous companies with sustainable strategies in place, numerous business executives are still apprehensive about the benefits of implementing sustainability in their organization. Businesses that promote sustainable practices are not only more likely to improve efficiency and increase profits, but also assist in the preservation of the environment and the reduction of carbon emissions.

Sustainability A Lot Like Social Media

Wed, 2012-07-18 08:36

A couple of weeks ago, I attended a keynote address given by Gary Vaynerchuk, a best-selling author, business visionary, successful entrepreneur, and wine and social media expert. Gary was an early adopter of social media, using video posts to build a following for what became a multi-million dollar business selling wine via the Internet. As I listened to Gary’s story and his message about the social media revolution, it occurred to me that there is another parallel cultural shift happening right now – corporate sustainability.

I’ve worked for Everblue for a little over three years. In that time, I have been granted the opportunity to attend four conferences: Greenbuild 2010, ACI National 2011, ACI Home Energy Trainer Conference 2011, and ACI National 2012.

Solar Sales Jobs On The Rise

Thu, 2012-07-12 08:47

Green jobs have gradually increased over the past few years, and according to recent statistics, the job growth potential will only continue to rise. The Solar Foundation, a nonprofit advocacy organization, recently indicated that the solar job market grew at nearly 10 times the rate of overall employment gains in 2011. More importantly, they found that the fastest growing subset of the solar job market included sales professionals.

Tue, 2012-07-10 12:10

Net metering is an important component of most U.S. plans to meet ambitious renewable energy goals. More than 40 states currently have policies in place. What is net metering? What are the benefits and challenges of such a policy? In a multi-part blog series, I will take a look at how net metering is boosting renewable energy and what it is about the policy that makes it a hotly contested, divisive issue in the U.S. As many states inch closer to reaching their net metering caps, legislators, utilities, and solar advocates are at a crossroads in determining how to move forward.
