RESNET stands for the Residential Energy Services Network

RESNET HERS Rater logoRESNET is a recognized standards-making body for home energy efficiency rating and certification.

The not-for-profit organization was founded in 1995 to develop a national market for residential energy efficiency. With support from the federal government and mandatory building codes, energy efficiency is now a standard feature in the nation's housing market. Builders, code officials, appraisers, and real estate agents are becoming increasingly aware of the value that RESNET brings to the new home industry.

Become a Home Energy Rater

The practitioners working in this industry are called home energy raters, or HERS Raters. Some may also call them energy auditors. HERS Raters differ from energy auditors, however, in that they are trained to do both home energy audits AND home energy ratings.

  • Home energy audits involve a prioritized list of improvements and a projected cost/benefit for each of the improvements. A HERS Rater directs customers to a qualified contractor to implement the suggested improvements.
  • Home energy ratings generally apply to new home construction or major remodeling. This rating comes from the HERS Index and may qualify a home for the ENERGY STAR Homes Designation.

Who Should Become a HERS Rater?
