Meet Local Energy Code With BPI Training

Duct Leakage TestingThe construction industry relies on building codes to provide guidance and standardization. States and municipalities are responsible for adopting a set of codes and/or placing modifications on the model code. The model codes get updated every three years with the intent of incorporating new technologies, materials, and methods into our building processes. As a region adopts a new code, builders and contractors must educate themselves on what's new and make sure that their skills and procedures are in compliance.

Updates to the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) have driven builders to seek BPI training or RESNET HERS Rater certification in order to remain compliant and competitive in the marketplace. Builders working in locations that have adopted the 2009 or 2012 IECC energy codes are now faced with new requirements for air leakage and duct testing. The Building Performance Institute has taken steps to directly address this skill set with the BPI Infiltration & Duct Leakage (BPI IDL) Certification. This training is focused primarily on blower door and duct testing to evaluate air leakage in homes.

Although BPI IDL Certification is not specifically required to test homes for IECC compliance, achieving BPI IDL Certification verifies that an individual can perform blower door and duct testing to the ASTM E1554-07 standard. In addition, BPI IDL is one of the quickest and most affordable pathways for gaining this skill set. At $749, you learn how to set up and operate blower door and duct blaster equipment. This fee also includes the BPI IDL field exam. With this training, you walk away with a BPI Certification and the tools necessary to remain in compliance with your local energy code.

BPI IDL training is available nationwide through Everblue. Take a look at the map below to determine which energy code has been adopted in your area and then view our locations page to find training near you.

Why read a dense book about the IECC energy code when you can gain real hands-on skills that you'll use in the field? There's no better way to learn about air leakage and duct testing than to actually do it!
