Mitchell Joachim

Hosted by USGBC Students & Emerging Professionals, Dr. Joachim is a leader in ecological design and urbanism. He is a co-founder at Terrefuge and Terreform ONE, a non-profit and philanthropic design collaborative that integrates ecological principles in the urban environment. Joachim was selected by Wired magazine for “The 2008 Smart List: 15 People the Next President Should Listen To,” and he has also appeared on “Colbert Report.” His Fab Tree Hab project, which is a living tree house, has been widely published, as well as exhibited at the MoMA. Popular Science dubbed Joachim an environmental visionary for their 2010 piece “The Future of the Environment.” In addition, Joachim has won the History Channel and Infiniti Excellence Award for City of the Future, as well as Time magazine’s Best Invention of 2007.

He earned a Ph.D. at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a MAUD from Harvard University, a M.Arch. from Columbia University, and a BPS with Honors from SUNY at Buffalo. Mitchell is an Associate Professor at NYU and previously served as the Frank Gehry Chair at University of Toronto. Earlier, he was on the faculty at Columbia, Syracuse, Washington, and Parsons.
