In September 2013, we posted a blog called Las Vegas: Bright Lights, Green City? questioning how energy efficient a place nicknamed “Sin City” could actually be. That post focused primarily on the growth of LEED-certified buildings in the city. Poor HVAC Installation Leads to Increased Energy Use

A new study from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) revealed that poor installation of air conditioning and heat pump units often leads to unsatisfactory energy performance. This research took three years to compile, with the help of surveys, field evidence, and various measurements for modeling. Veterans Take LEED Exam at No Cost

We receive a lot of inquiries from veterans and active duty military about whether their G.I. Bill will cover any of their LEED expenses. The good news is that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will reimburse the cost of the LEED Green Associate and LEED AP credential exams for U.S. military veterans, eligible dependents, and reservists. LEED 2009 Project Deadline Extended

As many of you may be aware, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) launched a new version of its LEED Rating System in November 2013. The update, called LEED Version 4, applies to individual credentials as well as building projects.

The USGBC has allowed an overlap of projects being submitted for consideration under LEED 2009 and LEED v4 standards. The deadline for LEED 2009 projects was originally set for June 15, 2015, but the USGBC recently announced that they are extending the deadline to October 31, 2016.  Read more: LEED 2009 Project Deadline Extended »

New Energy Code in Massachusetts

In July 2013, the State Board of Building Regulations and Standards (BBRS) voted to adopt the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code (2012 IECC) and ASHRAE 90.1-2010 with MA amendments as the new baseline energy code. The BBRS allowed for the new regulations to run concurrently with the current energy regulations until July 1, 2014. During that time, either set of energy regulations could be used when applying for a building permit. Now, the new regulations must be used when applying for a building permit.

The New BPI Accreditation Program

In 2010, the Building Performance Institute (BPI) offered a specialized contractor program called BPI Accreditation. This program was meant for companies that provided home performance services.
