Check out the clip where Jon Stewart reviews the history of our country's declarations of energy independence. I think his analysis is dead on. At the national level, we have made many declarations and have fallen way short of our stated goals. However, I am optimistic that things are changing.

I am personally excited, as I believe that we are on the cusp of major policy, societal, and technological changes that will likely make our energy dependence a thing of the past - although probably not for another decade or two. Here at Everblue, we see grassroots-level commitment and nationwide adoption of energy efficiency certifications and standards (such as ENERGY STAR, BPI Energy Auditor Certification, RESNET HERS Rater Certification, LEED Certification, and more). I am talking about local jurisdictions and municipalities getting serious about their energy usage and making changes. Just look at California's CalGreen standards, which raise the green building bar significantly! Look at Austin, TX, which now mandates a home energy audit when you sell your house!

What did you think of President Obama's Oval Office address last Tuesday? Do you really think the Gulf Oil spill will inspire America to reduce its dependence on oil (foreign or domestic)?
