Regardless of your education, occupation, or work experience – you ARE eligible to sit for the LEED Green Associate exam.

Granted, having work experience or education in a related field of architecture, engineering, construction management, etc. certainly offers some advantages in terms of a base familiarity of green building terms and strategies. LEED is a voluntary rating system, just as the USGBC is an agency independent of the federal government. Federal initiatives, however, are underway to require LEED certification of buildings. Most regulations requiring LEED are currently at the local level.

The first part of my title above is not a typo. Many people say LEEDS Certification when referring to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system for green buildings. Many folks search for LEEDS, LEEDS AP, or LEEDS Certification in Google.
